Privacy Policy
Northa · Last updated July 28, 2026
Notice: This policy reflects our current data practices honestly. Statements about FERPA, COPPA, and GDPR describe our intentions and current implementation. Formal legal compliance review is ongoing. If you have questions or concerns, contact us at northa.purpose@gmail.com.
Northa helps college and pre-college students find purpose and direction through reflection, experiments, and their Compass. This policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, who can see it, and what rights you have over it. We process student data and take that responsibility seriously.
Who this applies to
Students (13+)
Northa is for students aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13. If we learn a child under 13 has registered, we will delete their account and all associated data immediately.
Students aged 13–17 (pre-college track)
We recommend obtaining parental or guardian consent before using Northa. Our pre-college track includes additional privacy defaults — reflections are private by default and not visible to program staff unless the student explicitly enables sharing in Profile → Connections & Privacy.
Institutional users (school programs)
If your school or program has a formal agreement with Northa, your use is also governed by your institution's data processing agreement (DPA). In that context, your school is the data controller for educational records; Northa acts as a data processor.
EU/EEA residents
Your data is processed under GDPR. Northa acts as the data processor under institutional agreements, and as the data controller for direct (non-institutional) accounts.
What we collect
Account information
Email address and full name provided at registration.
Purpose and reflection data
Questionnaire answers, your purpose statement (Northstar), Compass learnings, experiment reflections, daily journal entries, energy and meaning ratings, honest outcome choices, and any notes you write. This is the most sensitive data we hold — see "Who can see your reflections" below.
Experiment activity data
Which experiments you save, plan, start, complete, pause, or abandon; step completions; deliverable captures; ratings and next-step choices (repeat, remix, raise, switch); timestamps throughout the experiment lifecycle.
Onboarding and profile data
Your track (college or precollege), horizon, goals, interests, skills, schedule preferences, and any context you provide during onboarding. Also your cohort or program membership if applicable.
Usage data
Pages visited, features used, session duration, and standard web log data (IP address, browser type, device). Used for product improvement and support — not for advertising.
Communications
Content of messages you send us through support channels.
Who can see your reflections
This is the question students and parents ask most. Here is the precise answer:
- ✓You always. All your reflections, ratings, experiment notes, and journal entries are visible to you at any time.
- ⚙Your assigned advisor — only if you enable sharing. By default, advisors see only engagement signals (whether you've logged or completed an experiment, not what you wrote). To share reflections, purpose statement, or evidence with your advisor, go to Profile → Connections & Privacy and toggle each type of sharing on. You can revoke this at any time. Private notes are never shared.
- ⚙Program facilitators — aggregated engagement only. Facilitators in pre-college cohorts see cohort-level engagement data (e.g., how many students completed Day 3, average energy trends). They do not see individual written reflections.
- ⚙Institution admins — program metrics only. Admins see institution-wide program statistics and enrollment data. They do not see individual reflections.
- ✕Never sold or shared for advertising. We do not sell, rent, or trade personal data. We do not use student data to train third-party AI models without explicit consent.
How we use your data
To deliver the service
Generating your purpose statement and Compass learnings, personalizing experiment recommendations, powering Nova (your AI guide), tracking your experiment lifecycle, and enabling advisor connections.
To improve Northa
Aggregated, anonymized usage data helps us understand which experiments work, where students get stuck, and how to improve the product. We never analyze your individual reflections for this purpose.
To communicate with you
Sending experiment reminders, completion recaps, and program notifications if you're in an institutional cohort. You can opt out of non-essential emails from your profile settings.
For security and compliance
Detecting fraud, enforcing our Terms, and meeting legal obligations.
FERPA (US educational records)
For students accessing Northa through a US educational institution, data generated in the app may constitute "education records" under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), 20 U.S.C. § 1232g.
Northa's role: When your school has a formal DPA with us, Northa acts as a "school official" with a "legitimate educational interest" as defined by FERPA. We operate under the school's direction for those records.
Student rights under FERPA: You (or your parent/guardian if you are under 18) have the right to inspect and review education records, request corrections, and control disclosure to third parties. Contact your school's registrar to exercise these rights — the school is the rights-holder for institutional accounts.
What we don't do: We do not disclose education records to third parties outside the school without written consent, except as permitted by FERPA.
Data retention: We retain education records for the duration of the institutional agreement plus 12 months, or until the student requests deletion, whichever comes first.
Questions: contact your school's registrar or email us at northa.purpose@gmail.com.
COPPA (children under 13)
Northa is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13 in compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), 15 U.S.C. § 6501 et seq.
Registration requires users to confirm they are 13 or older via our age acknowledgment gate. If we discover that a user is under 13, we will promptly delete their account and all associated data.
Parents who believe their child under 13 has registered should contact us immediately at northa.purpose@gmail.com. We will verify and delete the account within 5 business days.
Students aged 13–17: We apply additional privacy defaults — reflections are private by default and sharing with advisors requires an explicit student action. Institutions deploying Northa to students under 18 must have a signed DPA that addresses parental consent requirements applicable in their jurisdiction.
GDPR (EU/EEA users)
Legal bases for processing:
- Contract performance — to operate your account and deliver the service.
- Legitimate interests — product analytics and security (only where your rights don't override our interests).
- Legal obligation — where required by law.
- Consent — for optional features like sharing reflections with advisors or optional email engagement communications (withdrawable at any time via Profile → Connections & Privacy).
Your GDPR rights: Access, rectification, erasure ("right to be forgotten"), restriction of processing, data portability, objection, and the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority. Exercise these via your profile settings or by emailing northa.purpose@gmail.com. We will respond within 30 days.
Data transfers: Our infrastructure is hosted by Base44 (US). Transfers outside the EEA rely on Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) or equivalent mechanisms.
Subprocessors: Base44 (hosting/database), Resend (transactional email). A current subprocessor list is available on request.
Your rights and controls
Export your data
Email us at northa.purpose@gmail.com and we will prepare a full export of your data within 5 business days.
Delete your account
Delete your account and all associated data from your profile settings. We complete deletion within 30 days, except where retention is required by law or the applicable institutional DPA.
Control advisor sharing
Toggle sharing of your reflections, purpose statement, and evidence on or off at any time in Profile → Connections & Privacy. Changes take effect immediately. Private notes are never shared regardless of this setting.
Opt out of engagement emails
Unsubscribe from any email we send, or disable automated reminders in Profile → Connections & Privacy → Email engagement.
Correct your data
Update your name and email in your profile, or contact us to correct records you cannot edit yourself.
AI-generated insights and Nova
Northa uses AI in two ways: to generate your purpose statement options from your questionnaire answers, and to power Nova — your in-app AI guide who helps you refine your Compass and reflect on experiment patterns.
AI processes your own data only — we do not send identifiable student data to third-party AI providers for model training. Nova's suggestions are generated from your reflections and experiment history and are visible only to you.
AI suggestions are starting points for exploration — not career verdicts or professional advice. You can dismiss or ignore any Nova suggestion. AI output is reviewed periodically for quality and potential bias.
